Çankaya Mayor Alper Taşdelen said that the law proposal, which is described as the “censorship law” in the public, that will criminalize spreading misleading information to the public on social media and will bring prison sentences, is a great threat to democracy.

Alper Taşdelen, who answered Umut Yertutan's questions in the live broadcast he participated in Tele 1 TV Channel, harshly criticized the law proposal, which is publicly described as the "censorship law". Alper Tasdelen said the followings:

THE LAW PROPOSAL IS OPEN-ENDED AND UNCLEAR

“There are huge question marks. When a law comes, its framework must be very clear and concrete. Who will decide which news is included in this coverage? Who will interpret the news? What news is objectionable? What news can be given? What news is threatening? It is arbitrary that the framework of a law that is open-ended and unclear, especially in the field of journalism, in the field of media, on the freedom of information of the people, is not clear and can go wherever you go. But the most important feature of enacting laws is to prevent that arbitrariness.

NO SUCH THING CAN HAPPEN IN A DEMOCRACY

Now, some news channels, including you, were penalized for giving a speech of our general chairman live. This does not happen in any democracy. It is incompatible with democracy that news channels and television channels are penalized because of the speech of the main opposition leader. There is great quality here. It turned into a punishment. Because there is no balance and control in the current system, there is no legislative, executive, judicial, and control mechanism between the powers, unfortunately, we are experiencing these. This is a great threat to democracy. This is a great threat to freedom of information and freedom of thought. I hope that this bill will be withdrawn and nothing will be done to prevent democracy.”
