PACKAGING WASTE RECYCLING PROJECT

What is Çankaya Recycling Project?

Packaging Waste Management Plan prepared by Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning is submitted to the Ministry and the plan has been approved by the Ministry according to the Environment Law. As part of this Project, Çankaya Recycling Project which includes 124 neighborhoods has been completed in 5 stages.

  • You can throw your packaging waste into the recycling bins/containers in your neighborhood.

Packaging waste is being collected by our municipal trucks during the day time. The dissemination work of recycling bins/containers still continues in our region. Public institutions, schools and private work places are given recycling bins. Also, private work places which demand a small number of recycling bins can apply to our municipality with a petition and get their bins.

In order that collecting system become efficient, packaging waste must be left to a point on the ground floor of apartments. Waste is being taken from the packaging waste accumulating points located in the public areas, it is not been picking from upper floors.

What are our municipality’s studies?

Çankaya Municipality signed a triple protocol with authorized organization and licensed company and Packaging Waste Recycling Project has been carried out since April 2006.

How we collect packaging waste?

With Packaging Waste Recycling Project, it is aimed that collecting packaging waste (paper/cardboard, glass, metal, plastic, composite etc.) in houses, public institutions and schools separately; collecting separately from garbage by licensed companies; shipping waste to relevant organizations in order to recycle them and produce new products.

Our municipality has two methods of packaging waste to be collected separately at their source;
1. Door to door collection (Address-based collection)

People collect packaging waste such as glass, metal, plastic, paper/cardboard separately in bags from other waste in residential and business locations. When 3 bags of packaging waste are collected, our municipality collects waste from its source.

2. Recycling points (Recycling Bin System)

This application aims citizens collect packaging waste separately from other waste in their houses and workplaces bring this waste to recycling bins created in neighborhood centers. For this purpose, bins and containers are places outer places.

SEPARATE COLLECTION OF GLASS WASTE AT THE SOURCE

When packaging waste is collected with other waste, it is possible that the glasses are broken, dirty and have the less economic value and increase the recycling cost. So, a new project called “Separate Collection of Glass Packaging Waste” has launched. Under this Project, recycling bins are placed by Serdal Çelik Ltd. Co. (0312 815 25 44) and glass packaging waste are collected separately from other waste (metal, plastic, paper/cardboard and composite).

Why recycle?

  • Reduces the amount of waste going to solid waste landfill site, ensures the protection of the environment.
  • Facilitates the transportation and storage of garbage.
  • Reduces the use of raw materials and protects our natural resources.
  • Provides energy saving up to 95%.
  • Slows global warming.
  • Contributes new job creation and national economy.
  • Invests in the future.

Energy saving

Recycling saves energy by reducing the number of industrial processes in production of materials. For example; metal cans are directly melted and converted into new products in the recycling process. So that, production can be done without the need of ore is used for production of these metals and purification process of the ore. In this way, the recycling of an aluminum box has energy saving rate of 95% in comparison to producing a new product from the raw material. Similarly, the energy required for reprocessing of paper separated from solid waste is 50% of the energy required for normal operation. In addition, water saving is 45%. Likewise, high amount of energy saving can be obtained from recycling of glass and plastic waste.

Contribution to Economy

Recycling is a productive economic investment in the long term. Economic problems may occur as a result of the reduction of raw material and rapid consumption of natural resources. Recycling may create positive impacts on the economy at this point. Reducing the consumption of energy and natural resources is very important for the national economy. In addition, as a result of the reduction of raw materials’ consumption which we are dependent from other countries such as oil consumption, our money stays within the country and we have better national economy. By exporting the products such as synthetic fibers we produce after recycling, we have inflow of foreign currency to our country.

Reduction of the amount of waste

Waste quantity accumulated in the landfills and the energy needed for the transportation and storage of the waste is decreased by the favor of recycling process. It was observed that the density of domestic waste is 0,6 kg/m3, whereas the density of packaging waste is 0,3 kg/m3. For domestic waste this difference is not significant considering the weight but it is a very significant difference considering the volume. During the garbage collection processes, domestic garbage can be compressed up to %80 by volume, whereas packaging waste can only be compressed up to %25 by volume. Larger quantities of domestic garbage can be collected per vehicle and the collection and storage costs can be reduced if the packaging waste is collected separately. Landfills can be used more effectively as well.

Investment fot the future

The efficient use of natural resources provided us by earth is very important in order that future generations not to have shortage of resources. If we use natural resources sparingly, the future generations will have less resource shortage and they will have the opportunity to benefit from the natural resources. The recycling industry is developing from day to dayin our country. This development will allow to establish of new facilities and the creation of new business opportunities.
