ÇANKAYA PLAYS A LEADING ROLE IN THE ”EUROPEAN HEALTHY CITIES NETWORK“

Çankaya Municipality participated in the United Nations World Health Organization European Healthy Cities Conference held in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Çankaya Municipality presented its activities on health, environment, gender equality and people with disabilities during the meeting where the organization and objectives of the 2019-2024 period were put forward.

Çankaya Municipality participated in the United Nations World Health Organization European Healthy Cities Conference, where the member cities and municipalities of the European Healthy Cities Network came together. The conference was attended by 500 people from 60 countries with the slogan: ”Changing Cities to Change the World” in the 30th Anniversary of the Healthy Cities Movement.  Mayors, public administrators, municipal councilors and project coordinators, as well as scientists from universities attended the meeting, where the closure of the 6th phase covering the period of 2014-2018, and the beginning of the 7th phase of covering 2019-2024 were evaluated.

The representatives of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality and Çankaya Municipality attended the conference with the representatives of Healthy Cities Association. Healthy Cities Association presented 3 verbal 2 poster presentations, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality presented 1 verbal presentation and Çankaya Municipality presented 1 verbal and 3 poster presentations. Phd. Ethem Torunoğlu, Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs and SKB (Healty Cities Association) Coordinator represented Turkey by presenting a verbal presentation titled “Creating a Resilient City by Empowering Women”, who also made 3 poster presentations titled ”Healthy City, Livable City“, ”Voluntary Test and Information Center“, And “We are More Beautiful With Different Colors“.

The United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals were addressed in the Conference, which was defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) under the theme of initiating Phase 7 and “Changing Cities to Change the World”. The establishment of healthy urban spaces to live in peace, tranquility, prosperity on a local and global scale was adopted in the studies that carried out in line with the principles called 6P (Peace, Planet, Participation, Prosperity and Place) set by WHO.

THE PLAN OF PHASE 7 COMPLETED

Çankaya Municipality, which participated in the conference with its projects and works in the field of health, environment, gender equality and people with disabilities, also attracted attention with the brochures and books prepared in English. Çankaya Municipality, which became a member of the “European Healthy Cities Network” in the Phase 3 period in 2003, has completed its preparations for the Phase 7 covering 2019-2024 and has taken its place among the cities that are able to do the application for renewal of membership immediately. Çankaya Municipality, which presented Çankaya City Health Indicators and City Health Development Plan (2019-2023) document to the public on 7 April 2018 World Health Day, set out its main goals for a “happy and healthy city” by conveying the report to the WHO authorities in the Belfast Conference.

Çankaya Mayor Alper Taşdelen, who made a statement on the subject by stating that Çankaya is a district where 17 percent of the capital city population lives, said that: “We work for all sections and produce special projects in Çankaya with a literacy rate of 98 per cent, where poverty is below 5 per cent. We are carrying out projects and activities for gender equality, people with disabilities, environmental awareness as well as many other activities such as kindergartens, spring houses, women's shelters, counseling centers, home care and health services. In the climate and environment area, we signed the “Covenant of Mayors” and prepared the “Sustainable Energy Action Plan”, which includes 2020 targets. Our goal is to create a healthy and happy city.”

In addition to Çankaya Municipality from Turkey, the conference was attended by the Executive and Science Advisory Board of the Healthy Cities Association (SKB) and the managers of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality.
