Alper Tasdelen: From 1989 To 2019: Social Democrats Will Regain City-Managements, October 4, 2017 (www.politikyol.com)

It has been almost 30 years since the social democrats won the local election success against ANAP (MOTHERLAND PARTY) in 1989. If elections are held on the declared date, a new permanent success can be achieved in the thirtieth year of this great success in 2019. These conditions are ripe for this.

Undoubtedly, very different evaluations can be made on 1989 success and failure to make it permanent. Today, however, the main responsibility for social democrats is to win 2019. This, of course, should not be construed as a political success of a party. We need to regain our cities, and our cities are not tolerating this order any more. I always express this assertion moving from our current successes with our experiences; MUNICIPALISM IS THE WORK OF SOCIAL DEMOCRATS, ATATURKISTS. Because we see our cities as not rent areas; we see them as living spaces. For us, the city is a common place where people make joint decisions and co-govern. For us, the city is the place where the peace of man and nature is provided, and where all living life possibilities are produced. For us, the city is an area where there is no discrimination in life, no intervention, no double standards, everyone receives equal service and equally benefits from city facilities. For us, the city is a place where there is no discrimination, no intervention, and no double standard is experienced in daily life and an area where everyone receives equal service and benefits equally from city facilities.

Since 1994, the rent-centered transformation of our cities has derived our cities from carrying the features of being a city, and transformed our cities into hybrid spaces. Our cities, which have been buried in concrete with their historical buildings, culture and accumulation, are now out of being the city. We are faced with very serious problems from the collapse of the city centers to the increase of urban poverty, from the deepening of the class divisions within the cities to the disappearance of the common urban cultures. That’s why, it is necessary for the social democrats to update their understanding of urban governance and to face the people with a new urban understanding in 2019.

The AKP (JUSTICE AND DEVELOPMENT PARTY)'s management approach has lead the disidentification of our cities. The identity of the city refers to the history of that city, the accumulation of human struggle, and the constructions that are built in each area, and above all, a kind of formation. Today, no distinguishing feature of our cities has remained. Because they are all turned into concrete piles. That’s why, it is necessary to rescue our cities with a very serious preparation from this chaos, disidentification, ant collapse which they are dragged into. The only power to do this is social democrat and Atatürkist municipalities. An example given by our General Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu is very important and valuable. Bursa was known as Green Bursa before AKP management. Now there is no trace of that green Bursa. Our teacher Yılmaz Büyükerşen has redesigned Eskişehir, rebuilt it and created a model city. The difference between these two cities reveals a great detail and it often confirms our thesis that we express often that municipalism is the work of social democrats and Ataturkists.

Today, in Çankaya, the equal service that we provide for everyone from children to women, from elderly people to people with disabilities reveals the social direction of municipalism. We do not act with an understanding of service that is addictive. We do not produce a culture of addiction that people vote for us. On the contrary, we are building spaces that people liberate. So we fill the content of life with the richest activities. We present our most valuable land to the service of our people. If our party is not in power, we are opening a work every week, with a great breakthrough, without any obstacles; or we are laying the groundwork. Although our party is not in power, we are opening a new construction every week without knowing any obstacles with a great breakthrough; or we are laying the groundwork. Along with that, with a great commitment, happiness and dedication, we bring forth a management approach that integrates life with literature, cinema, concerts, science festivals, women's and children's festivals in Atatürk's Çankaya.

Turkey needs such a city management. Because, as in Çankaya, social democratic municipalism means free and equal life, culture, art, science and civilization. Our cities and, and of course, all our citizens need a social democratic governance more than ever. I believe that social democrats will make a very serious breakthrough 30 years after 1989. This breakthrough will reveal a will, a social and political will to govern the cities of our country for a very long time together with itself.
