Environmental Effects of Waste Vegetable Oil

  • Millions of tons of used vegetable oil pollute the environment in the world every year. This number is 350.000 tones in Turkey.
  • 1 liter of waste vegetable oil pollutes 1 million liters of drinking water.
  • Used vegetable oil generates the %25 of domestic waste water.
  • Waste oil accumulates in the waste water drains and sewage lines causing the narrowing of the pipes and the blockages.
  • Waste oil increases the pollution load in waste water regeneration plants and causes the higher operation costs.
  • Waste oil that mixes with domestic waste causes fires in the landfills.
  • The calories of the energy in waste oil are quite high. When the waste oil is poured in the water or in the sewage, it covers the water surface harming the water system, blocks the sun light and the transfer of oxygen from air to water. Waste oil decomposing in water consumes all the oxygen in the water in time and harms the living.
  • Waste oil harms the living species when it reaches to lakes, rivers or seas.

Waste vegetable oil which is carcinogenic;

  • Penetrates in the nature harming the environment and all the living species,
  • Blocks the sewage systems,
  • Increases the operation costs of waste water regenerations of cities,
  • Despite the fact that waste oil is known to be carcinogenic, it is reused in food sector because of the illegal collectors,
  • Contribute to additional costs because of the lost economic value caused by not recycling it.

What do we do to recycle?

  • There are machines in Kızılay and Çayyolu which distributes 0,50 TL when you pour 1 liter of waste vegetable oil in it, (these machines can distinguish the difference between waste oil from any other liquid)
  • Citizens who bring 5 liters of waste oil to specified collecting points in 30 different places of the district take 1 liter of detergent in return
